Roof Styles


Gable Roof-triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a dual pitched roof


Gambrel Roof- symmetrical two-sided roof with two slopes on each side


Hip Roof- type of all sides slope downwards to the walls

Saltbox Roof- slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house

Shed Roof-  roof having only one slope, or pitch

Bay Window- window projecting outward from the walls

Casement Window- window that is attached to its frame by one or more hinges

Clapboard- long, thin, flat piece of wood with edges horizontally overlapping in series

Dormer- structural element that protrudes from the plane of a sloping roof

Eaves- part of a roof that meets or overhangs the walls of a building

Fanlight- semicircular or semi-elliptical window with glazing bars or tracery sets radiating out like a fan

Palladian Window- archway or window with three openings

Pediment- triangular upper part of the front of a building

Portico- porch leading to the entrance of a building with a roof structure over a walkway supported by columns or enclosed walls

Rafter-structural members that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall plate, downslope perimeter or eave, and that are designed to support the roof deck















Sidelights- vertical window that flanks a floor
